Music Therapy

Music Therapy is an allied health profession that uses music to provide support based on an individual’s needs. Musical interventions are facilitated by a board-certified music therapist and address common goal areas including (but not limited to): stress management, self-expression, pain reduction, labor and delivery support, mood enhancement, legacy-building, bonding with your baby and relaxation.

These goal areas may take the form of the following interventions:

  • Kangaroo care or songwriting to enhance bonding
  • Multimodal neurologic enhancement to promote development and improve feeding outcomes
  • Playlists for sleep, energy or your birth experience
  • Postpartum mental health support through instrument play or guided relaxation
  • Birthing person and support person services

No musical background is necessary to benefit from music therapy services throughout your maternal health journey. You can receive Music Therapy sessions at Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital at the bedside.

To explore how Music Therapy may be able to support you, you can either speak with a medical provider, such as your nurse, physician, or social worker or you can reach out via email at [email protected] (please include your room number).

Pregnancy and Newborn Loss Support Group

Experiencing a pregnancy or newborn loss of any kind can be very emotional and difficult. The Pregnancy and Newborn Loss Support Group is for mothers, fathers, relatives, and friends – anyone affected by a miscarriage, stillbirth, early infant death, medical termination or other loss.

Our group facilitators have experience with pregnancy and newborn loss and provide a setting where you can share your experiences, give and receive support, and learn to cope with feelings about your loss. Whether you choose to share with the group or just listen, you are encouraged to attend.

*Please note that due to the emotional nature of discussions, it is requested that arrangements are made for children so they are not visible on the Zoom meeting.

Date, Time and Location

The group traditionally meets in person but has transitioned to a virtual group during the COVID-19 pandemic to continue to provide support and help connect those who have experienced a pregnancy or newborn loss.

Groups are held the second Tuesday of every month, 6:30 – 8 p.m. Register for the Pregnancy and Loss Support Group.

Groups are free, non-denominational and open to all. You do not have to be a Michigan Medicine patient to attend. Registration is required to receive the Zoom link.

Cancellations

While not anticipated, if the group needs to be cancelled for any reason (lack of registration, ill facilitator, etc.), the group will be cancelled by 2 p.m. the day of the scheduled group. Those registered will receive a cancellation notice via email.
